Anisets and infusions

Anisets and infusions.

For moms and dads:

Commercially known as Blevit Digest.
Although star anise (anethole) has properties that reduce gas in the digestive tract, many precautions must be taken with its misuse.
As with other infusions of chamomile, fennel, lemon balm and licorice, great caution should be exercised, since many formulas have too much sugar and can cause reduced milk intake.

For healthcare professionals:

They are widely used in their commercial format (Blevit digest TM), and its active ingredient, anethole, has carminative properties, that is, it favors the decrease of gases in the digestive tract.

It is advisable to take precautions in its use, since the recommended dose and the form of preparation are not well specified, so clinical pictures are described due to misuse, poisoning.

(Guerrero J; Tagarro A; Valle A; García J: García S. Nine cases of star anise poisoning. Rev Esp Pediatr. 2002; 58 (2) 111-114).

Other infusions of chamomile, lemon balm, fennel and licorice can be a slight improvement although the commercial formats of these infusions tend to have too much sugar and their excessive use can cause reduction in milk intake with negative consequences for the nutrition and development of the baby.
